ABSTRACT
Baduy is a traditional society which lives in the west side of Java island, Indonesia. This Community, in Indonesia, pertained a primitive community, because their life refers to some of old fashion ways. In the globalization era today, however, this community survives with their life principles.
The Baduy life principles are divided into two genres, they are ‘prinsip ketuhanan’ and ‘prisip rukun’. Both of them are implemented in every way of living, including the neighborhood arrangement. We can learn many things from their strategy in choosing a place to live, planning, designing, developing, and managing the settlement, even from their way of interacting.
In our perception, the implementation of both Baduy life principles might seem unique, or primitive, more primitive than our life style and our way in developing our community. Somehow, we cannot deny, that there are simple lessons in their way of life that can save us from ruining our environment. If we, who often call our self modern society, have just a little bit of awareness, we will not feel reluctant to look up and learn from this primitive society.
Key words: ‘prinsip ketuhanan’, prinsip rukun’, society, sustainability, way of life
1.INTRODUCTION
The basic environmental issues raised on the first Earth Day—the degradation, population growth and agricultural limits leading to global famine, pollution of air and water, the disastrous potential climate effecting on concentration of greenhouse and ozone depletion in the atmosphere, and their corollaries – have all been examined in exhausting details, and controversial evidence of the irreparable damage inflicted on the planet is mounting day by day. The subtle but significant philosophical shift that has taken place since the first Earth Day has been an emphasis on the concept on sustainability rather than ecology; making it important to understand where this term has come from and how its implications for the future, particularly for those in the design proffesions (Steele, 1997.)
Baduy society is one of many traditional societies in Indonesia. This community, in Indonesia, is considered to be a primitive community. This judgment emerges because we, who considered ourselves ‘modern’, compare their way of life with ours. However, we need to think over this judgment because Baduy community, that we assume primitive society, can survive with their way of life in today’s modernization era.
